Army suicides hit record number in June

Army suicides hit record number in June

By Liz Goodwin – Fri Jul 16, 11:34 am ET

Thirty-two soldiers took their own lives last month, the most Army suicides in a single month since the Vietnam era.Eleven of the soldiers were not on active duty. Of the 21 who were, seven were serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said. Army officials say they don't have any answers to why more and more soldiers are resorting to suicide. "There were no trends to any one unit, camp, post or station," Col. Chris Philbrick, head of the Army's suicide  prevention task force, told CNN. "I have no silver bullet to answer the question why." Last year, a record-breaking 245 soldiers committed suicide. The Army seems on track to surpass that number this year, as 145 soldiers have taken their lives in the first half of 2010. Tim Embree of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America testified Wednesday before the House Veterans Affairs Committee that many soldiers fear seeking help."The heavy stigma associated with mental health care stops many service members and veterans from seeking treatment, "he said. "More than half of soldiers and Marines in Iraq who tested positive for a psychological injury reported concerns that they will be seen as weak by their fellow service members."
He pointed out that the statistics don't include the number of veterans who end their own lives. That figure surged 26  percent from 2005 to 2007, according to the Veterans Affairs Department. The Army has a 24-hour suicide prevention hotline, and has videos and other resources on its website. The Army's new  suicide prevention video features a soldier talking about his own failed suicide attempt after his wife said she wanted  to divorce him. The rifle he used to try to kill himself didn't fire, he says, and he later found out his comrade had disabled it because he was worried about him.

June was worst month for Army suicides, statistics show
By Mike Mount, CNN Senior Pentagon Producer
July 15, 2010 8:03 p.m. EDT

Washington (CNN) -- More U.S. soldiers killed themselves last month than in recent Army history, according
to Army statistics released Thursday, confounding officials trying to reverse the grim trend. The statistics show
that 32 soldiers killed themselves in June, the highest number in a single month since the Vietnam era. Twenty-one of them were on active duty, while 11 were in the National Guard or Army Reserve in an inactive status. Seven
of those soldiers killed themselves while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Army numbers.
The spike comes after the monthly suicide numbers had dropped following a January high of 28, and Army officials admit they still haven't answered the question of why troops are committing suicide at a record rate. "There were no trends to any one unit, camp, post or station," said Col. Chris Philbrick, head of the Army's suicide prevention task force. "I have no silver bullet to answer the question why." He said he could offer only what he has said before: "Continued stress on the force and the opportunities we have been facing in terms of the challenges in the Army  continue to cause these events to take place." Including the June numbers, 145 soldiers have killed themselves this year,  more than half of the total number for all of 2009, according to Army statistics. In 2009, a record-breaking year for suicides in the service, 245 soldiers killed themselves. In another attempt to put a halt to the trend, the Army released a suicide prevention video, a follow-up to one released last year. The updated video is designed to "hit home" with soldiers and instill the importance of getting help, Philbrick said. The video, titled "Shoulder to Shoulder: I Will Never Quit," begins with the compelling story of a soldier whose wife said she was divorcing him. The soldier, Spc. Joseph Sanders, says his wife was his whole world. "I grabbed my rifle, put it under my chin and pulled the trigger," Sanders says. The gun did not fire, he says, and when
he took the rifle apart he discovered that a key part was missing. His Army buddy then tells viewers he removed the part  because Sanders was showing signs that he could kill himself. Asked why the Army thinks this video will be more effective than the first one, Philbrick said the soldiers will relate to it better. Watch the video on the Army's Suicide Prevention  website The first video, made up of a mix of actors and real soldiers, "sucked," he said. It was rushed out, and troops  did not believe in it. He said some even openly laughed at it. "This video has all real soldiers with real stories, "Philbrick said. The video is part of a series of efforts to cut the suicide rate. Last year, the Army required all  soldiers around the world to stop working and spend a day watching the first video and receiving suicide prevention  training. Philbrick said the alarming June numbers will not bring another Army-wide training day, called a stand-down. He said the new video will be incorporated immediately into the standard suicide prevention training for new troops and the yearly training all soldiers go through.

It has been 93 Days sense I joined Xanga and I have not made one entry shame on me. One would think by now I would have decided what direction I want my blog to go but I have not. For way to many years now my mind's eye cannot or will not see what to do next. If you gave me a hammer a nail and a picture then sent me in to an empty room and told me to pick the best place to hang the picture. It might take the rest of my life and I doubt that I have it hung even then. Should I hang it in the center of one wall about eye level if so which wall. Would one want to see the picture when they open the door and come in to the room perhaps on the wall with the door They will see it just before leaving then again maybe way up near the ceiling in the corner the right corner or the left corner maybe down low can I get the picture to hang upside down or at a angle 90, … 45, … 30, so the wall is going to have a million nail holes or no nail holes because I don’t want to put the nail in until I am sure that this or that is the best place for the picture but than best for whom best for them or best for me and what makes is the best place for the picture actually is there only one best place sure I can only hang this picture in one place so there must be one place that is better than all others so I guess I should decide on which wall shall the picture hang. … That’s pretty much my life I am a male born in July 1947 in Du Quoin IL. Yes this year I am 58 years old I take my birthday count on Jan 1 which seems to upset everyone they say you can not count the year until the day of your birth but I do anyway … sue me … a few of my thoughts ... I would not burn our flag or any other countries flag nor do I think that any person that does should be imprisoned I love our country but do think we have lost more freedom under this administration than any 10 administrations yes I am a proud Democrat yes if Bill Clinton ran for president again I would vote for him again your going to say but he lied under oath yes he did ever person that has become president takes that oath I wish he would have said that is a personal matter that is between my wife and I and frankly it is none of you business …  I ask did Bill Clinton’s lie or George Bush’s lie cost the lives of  2,172 Americans

First I would like (If I. May) to thank those of you that left comments.  Thank you. Some of you that read my first post and the comments must realize the jar, bag, box, tub, or barrel of pickles I'm in.

  1. How dose a person prove their age? Photos? Sure. Whose photo?  No. That will not work. So lets go onto the next pickle we can come back to this one later.
  2. Can a person that professes to be 58 years old even find the power button on a computer? If anyone had asked me that question, before I read the comments, I would have answered Yes, Sure, or Of course. Truly believing that a 58 year old could indeed find and activate the power button on a computer.
